Double Glazing and Triple Glazing can reduce heat lost through windows and doors. The energy saved in terms of Euro or Dollars is huge and is therefore equally encouraging to you the home owner. The local building codes dictate that a certain percentage of the building shell has to be allocated for windows. This is as a provision for ventilation and also natural light in the house.
What is double and triple glazing?
A typical Double Glazing consists of the following standard constructional features;
• Two Glass Panes (maintaining a space between the two)
• A spacer of either Fiberglass or metal/plastic composite at the edge (to keep the panes approximately 16 to 19mm apart)
• A desiccant placed in side the spacing (to prevent moisture condensation in the gas filled space)
• Silicone seal at the outer periphery
• A butyl seal at the spacer
• An inert high density gas, filled inside the spacing (after evacuating)
A typical Triple glazing is similar to the above but has 3 glass panes with two sealed spaces. Available for incorporating in sash, frame or curtain walls double glazing may be used in doors as well.
A variant is the low – e (low emissivity) Double and Triple glazing. In this type the inner surface of the pane is coated with a refractive material of metal foil or polymer.
The advantageous of double /triple glazing
The double glazing is also some times called Insulated Glass Units. ( ICU ).The inert gas filled space is designed to stop heat leakage (or gain) due to;
- Radiation (Radiant Heat)
- Convection (due to gases in contact with the glass pane or panes, rising in temperature and causing gas circulation)
Addition of low emissivity coating reflects the radiant heat incident on it thereby preventing the loss (or gain) of thermal energy. Naturally this will result in decreased energy bills for you.
An added benefit of the product is the sound attenuation property.
The draw backs are;
- The Double and especially Triple Glazing is heavy. Handling during manufacture and building construction is difficult. Also the supporting structures have to be designed and constructed to suit this extra weight.
- If the spacing between 3 mm panes is going to be 16 to 19 mm the overall thickness would be about 22 to 25mm, which you will agree is bit thick for your liking. (If 4 mm glass is used this would be still thicker).
- The double glazing is costlier than single glass with a reflective coating or tinting.
- Over the time the spacers, seals, desiccants used by certain glass makers may perish.
- Also these may not have adequate extended warranties.
In spite of the above Double Glazing or Triple glazing needs to be seriously considered for your energy retrofit or the new house to be constructed. A higher BER will increase the value your house while saving heaps of cash for you over the years.
