Motivating Yourself Omaha NE

What motivates people? There are only two sources from where a person is motivated: outside or inside. When we say that a person is motivated by an outside source, the individual acts as the result of someone other than himself. It could be a boss at work, mother or father, wife or husband.

Motivating Yourself

What motivates people? There are only two sources from where a person is motivated: outside or inside. When we say that a person is motivated by an outside source, the individual acts as the result of someone other than himself. It could be a boss at work, mother or father, wife or husband. That's called external motivation.

There are two forms of external motivation – fear or incentive – whether you are being motivated by someone other than yourself or you are trying to motivate others. These two are governed by punishment and reward. The two extremes work initially, if the punishment is severe enough and/or the reward is significant. However, both have their limitations.

Typically, fear and incentive only work for a short period of time, if they work at all. They are temporary in nature.

In the case of fear, the person eventually comes to the point when he realizes that it's just not worth it, regardless of how severe the beating becomes. If the threat is a pay cut or loss of position or job, the individual simply quits and goes to work for someone else. He realizes that the fear is in his head and the punishment can be avoided.

In the case of incentive, the reward has to keep getting bigger and bigger for it to continue to be effective. Regardless of how big or how sweet the carrot gets, at some point it becomes insignificant.
